Penny Hogan, Soprano
Penny, a classically trained soprano, grew up on a farm in Scranton, Iowa. There Penny, her brother, Joe, and her three sisters, Kathy, Becky, and Julie, were raised by her parents, Beryl and Jean Johnson.. Some of her awards include: Who�s Who in American High Schools, Shoshana Foundation�s Richard F. Gold Career Grant, Metropolitan Opera Auditions Mid-Atlantic Regional Finalist, Outstanding Young Women of America, University of Michigan; Pi Kappa Lambda, and Who�s Who in American Colleges and Universities.
She has performed with the Anchorage Opera, Austin Lyric Opera, Augusta Opera, the Cedar Rapids Symphony, Central City Opera, Connecticut Grand Opera, Lyric Opera of Dallas, Natchez Opera Festival, New York City Opera Educational Program, Opera Omaha, Pennsylvania Stage Company, Sarasota Opera, and the prestigious Carnegie Hall. She has also performed countless sacred duet recitals with her husband, George Hogan.
Penny holds a Masters of Music in voice performance/opera minor from the University of Michigan and a Bachelors of Music Education/Voice from Simpson College where she graduated with cum laude honors. She has taught voice at Texas Christian University, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Oral Roberts University, Simpson College, Roanoke College, Virginia Tech University, and as a Teaching Assistant at the University of Michigan. She has also served as an Elementary Music Teacher for the Cleburne (Texas) Independent School District. George and Penny have two sons, Max and Joey and a Miniature Schnauzer named Wally.
George Hogan, Basso
After growing up in Abilene, Texas, with his brother, Ken, and his three sisters, Stephanie, Mona Beth, and Julie, and his parents, Charles and Bobbie Jean Hogan, Mr. Hogan, a classically trained basso, made his operatic debut at the young age of nineteen for a PBS filming as �Theseus� in A Midsummer Night�s Dream.
Some of his awards include a Sullivan Career Grant from the Sullivan Foundation, International Finalist in the Luciano Pavarotti Competition, �First Prize� Winner in the New York City San Francisco Opera Auditions, a Grand Finals Winner at the San Francisco Merola Opera Program, the winner of the Arturo Giargiari Bel-Canto Voice Competition in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a four year member of the Texas All State Choir, and Who�s Who in American High Schools.
He has been heard in operatic roles with Austin Lyric Opera, Baltimore Opera, Central City Opera, Connecticut Opera, Connecticut Grand Opera, Dallas Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Indianapolis Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Mississippi Opera, Natchez Opera Festival, Opera Colorado, Opera Memphis, Opera Omaha, Opera Pacific, Opera Company of Philadelphia, Orlando Opera, Palm Beach Opera, Sacramento Opera, Toledo Opera, Utah Opera, Der Vlaamse Oper in Antwerp, Belgium, Edmonton Opera in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and with L�Opera de Montreal in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and the famed Australian Opera House in Sydney, Australia.
He has also been heard in concerts at Alice Tully Hall (New York), Town Hall (New York), and with the Anchorage Symphony in Anchorage, Alaska, Eastern Music Festival, Houston Symphony, Lincoln Symphony in Lincoln, Nebraska, Opera Orchestra of New York City, Philadelphia Orchestra, Philadelphia Concerto Soloists, Philadelphia Singers, and the Washington Concert Opera. Mr. Hogan has been heard live on broadcasts from Lincoln Center, National Public Radio, and Public Broadcasting System Television Specials.
Mr. Hogan is currently finishing his Masters in Music from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary where he has received numerous scholarships. He holds a Bachelors of Music degree from Trevecca Nazarene University (Nashville, Tennessee), and a Performance Certificate in Opera from the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He has taught voice and opera theater at Oral Roberts University, French and German Diction at Texas Christian University, and held private voice studios in New York City, Tulsa, Oklahoma, Fort Worth, Texas, and Cleburne, Texas. He has most recently served as full-time Minister of Music at Field Street Baptist Church in Cleburne, Texas. In the fall of 2001 he joined the music faculty at the University of Mary Hardin Baylor, in Belton, Texas, as a full-time Voice Teacher and resident Artist.
